Human Composting

Natural organic reduction — body to soil in 30–45 days

64 providers · $4k–$7k typical cost · 24 states
How It Works

The body is placed in a reusable vessel along with wood chips, alfalfa, and straw. Over 30–45 days, naturally occurring microbes break down the body and organic materials into approximately one cubic yard of nutrient-rich soil. The soil is then cured for several additional weeks before being returned to the family or donated to conservation land.

Why Choose Human Composting?

Human composting saves an estimated one metric ton of carbon per person compared to conventional burial or cremation. The resulting soil can nourish new life — families can use it in gardens, forests, or donate it to conservation projects. The process uses one-eighth the energy of cremation and avoids embalming chemicals entirely.

Things to Consider

Currently available in a limited but growing number of states. The process takes longer than cremation (roughly 2–3 months total). Not all providers accept all cases — donors, those with certain infectious diseases, or those with specific medical devices may need case-by-case evaluation.
