Natural Burial
Return to the earth in a biodegradable burial
How It Works
The body is prepared without embalming chemicals (or with non-toxic, biodegradable alternatives) and placed in a simple biodegradable casket, shroud, or woven container. Burial takes place in a natural setting β often a dedicated green cemetery or conservation burial ground β without concrete vaults, metal caskets, or synthetic liners, allowing the body to decompose naturally and nourish the surrounding ecosystem.
Why Choose Natural Burial?
Natural burial eliminates the environmental costs of conventional burial: no formaldehyde-based embalming, no steel or hardwood caskets, no concrete vaults. Green cemeteries often function as conservation lands, preserving meadows, forests, and wildlife habitat in perpetuity. It is the most ancient and arguably most sustainable disposition method.
Things to Consider
Availability depends on local green cemeteries and conservation burial grounds. Costs vary widely β some green cemeteries are more affordable than conventional ones, while conservation burial grounds may charge a premium that includes land stewardship. Families should verify that the cemetery holds third-party certification (e.g., Green Burial Council) to ensure genuine green practices.
